Behind the windows- Part 2

I got my groceries delivered the other day… they came 2 days later, the vegetables were almost gone bad, and they only brought half the list of items. The guy said, don’t pay us till we deliver the rest… I am still waiting. Did something happen to him? Did he have to go into quarantine too? Just wondering…

Lately, our minds, our conversations and lives revolve around Covid-19. The news, both true and fake; the forwards… someone needs to really put a filter for those..like if I already received it in one group, can I be exempt from the next person who forwards it? And gosh, our leaders do need prayers. I choose to think that the virus is to blame for how unkind many of us are towards our leaders…Or have we always been such a heartless bunch??

But let’s get back to people watching (did you ever play those games when in a restaurant, trying to guess everyone’s story or make one up? Well, this is kinda like that…the names are fictional, some of the stories have a bit of fiction and some reality)..

Cori has been destined for greatness from when she was 7 and passed her first writing contest. She is smart, kind, and loved by God(she prefers to say it that way). She hasn’t been perfect, which is why she thinks God may be punishing her now for mistakes she made earlier in life. She went to school, graduated, worked, did a lot of volunteer work on her off days… then she got married, to a very handsome God loving man. It is year 3 and marriage has not been like any of them expected. When Cori was in her early 20s everyone exclaimed at what a great wife she would make some very lucky man one day. Well, were they wrong! Her man is not happy, and definitely doesn’t believe he is lucky. You see, Cori has a condition that makes some of the basic things in marriage difficult or should we say, next to impossible. And while the two love each other, there is no denying the elephant in the room… so they have existed, cried, prayed… nothing. Disappointment, anger and frustration set in to the point of resentment and depression. Believing she is the cause of the disunity, Cori is broken. Her dear husband has suffered enough because of her past mistakes and she thinks maybe the best route is to set him free, allow him to find himself a better suited wife, one who will bring back his smile and have him believe in a good God again. And for her? Well, it is God who dealt her this, maybe he will take her? Meanwhile those mistakes, she doesn’t mean murder…far from it, she just got into a couple of bad relationships.

Daniel is every mother’s dream. He is smart, handsome and God fearing. Just shy of 35, he believes he finally met the love of his life. He has been dating her for 11 months now and is getting ready to propose. He even bought the ring. Then he travelled for work. They talk on phone and do video calls but she is always busy. While away, an old girlfriend called and it seems that believing the rumours that the end of the world is near she decided to come clean. She has his child. 8 year old boy (That was before He came to know Christ, so slow down on your judgemental looks). Wait, what??? Could it be true? She sent the pictures(spititng imag, if he can say so himself), and birth certificate. The maths seems to add up but Daniel is in shock. What is he to do? Did he join the absentee fathers club without even applying to it or knowing he was up for membership? How does he tell Stella about this, they had already shared past stories and there was supposed to be no new surprises. His church group..what will they think? Can he go to sleep and hopefully when he wakes this will be just a bad dream? Meanwhile he keeps the ring in the drawer of his desk, but before that he stares at it. Will he have a future with her? Will she accept this son he hasn’t even met? Could there be more-and now he has to go down memory lane, should he start calling them to check? And when will this virus pass so he can actually get some answers to these questions?

Tali stands at the balcony looking around. He waves hello to the nice lady downstairs who always greets his mother and calls her “madam”. He looks down and wonders how far of a fall it is… He turned 16 today.

Behind those windows are real lives, real careers, real issues. Who are they? What are their stories?

Hey, I’m BK. I like to be able to do what I love, which, in essence, is to share my personal thoughts, lessons I pick up along the way, and other bits of my life in the hope that it will inspire someone, spark a conversation, or even just be a good read. I’ve come to realise that everyone has a story, and many times these get lost in the daily grind that is life. Whether it is not wanting to wake up in the morning or winning the lottery, it’s all worth telling. My hope for this space is not only to tell my story but also to share other stories and thoughts that may challenge young men and women across Africa and the world to share their own, practice writing, and, hopefully, read a book. I have also been declared a pluviophile (lover of rain) and an unapologetic sweet tooth. Thank you for sharing this journey with me!
