For some years I sat on interview panels or had to interview applicants for certain positions. And this question always came up ‘Tell us about yourself’. I must admit, I loved this particular point of any interview, I was always curious to hear how people would respond. And here is why.
I have been on the other side of the interview desk, often times I have dreaded this question, because no matter how prepared I was, I went silent on this one. I never seem to know what to say. So now that I am back in the job seeking streets, I can’t escape the thoughts that come whenever I think of an interview…whoooooooahh!!!
I will start with the why part and maybe along the way, you will get to know the who. Recently, I got many people (friends and family of course) asking me to take my ‘writing’ more seriously. I post my thoughts on Facebook like any other person, but I have always loved reading blogs. Never thought I should have one, because I did not think I have content that is serious enough or even worth blogging about.
My life is not that “interesting”.
I prefer to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate than go out dancing(this may be because I cannot dance to save my life or because I have a major undefined fear of crowds and noise). I am fairly organised, a bit adaptable and very very curious (yes, the kind that would get me into super serious trouble if I was not such a control freak).
I do not enjoy alcohol (again, control issues), never done drugs, hate fights but love arguments (not the serious kind, just the mind stimulating ones), and yes, you may find me typing away on my cheap smart phone or scribbling in one of my many notebooks (yeah, the physical kind, the ruled ones where you use an ink pen or pencil…some of us still use those) about anything and everything. Which is why some people think I should write more.
Wait, I was supposed to be talking about why this blog. This year in January I moved to Kenya. I had just quit my job, left everything familiar to me… so we could start a family. I chose to look at it as a new adventure, or a new start. Like most people, I of course decided to take stock of my life and to start ticking some things off my bucket list. Writing is one of them.
I write for the fun of it, because it calms me and also helps me process my own thoughts and other people’s actions. I also signed up for a leadership class called the Fearless Institute and was soon told I was required to start and keep a blog going. So I started a blog, or at least I tried to only to realise I registered one three years ago and never posted a single thing!!! So I decided to keep that one but to start posting on it.
If people read what I write, that will be great! However, it will mostly be about me, my thoughts…and also will probably not be structured. I have noted with interest that my thoughts can be random. I could start off thinking about having some tea and somehow end up wondering what it would feel like to be a box.
So yes, that is why I am here. To bring my random thoughts from Facebook and notebooks to one space. To more or less journal a bit more regularly and to be able to see over time how God has taken all my random thoughts and seemingly random happenings and made something beautiful.
Who am I? I am Belinda. Curious about human behaviour and cultures; passionate about leadership development and Africa in general; awed by God’s love for me and hoping to grow in love, kindness and character. I am so many things, yet none. All I know is, I am here, on this earth, for a reason and purpose and I hope to change someone’s life for the better.
