FEARLESS SUMMIT is an annual gathering of church and marketplace leaders who are passionate about bringing Godly change to every sector of society. The 11th Edition of the Fearless Summit was the first virtual one, was themed “BE THE SPARK: Sparking Change for a new normal” and was held from Monday 20th July to Sunday, 26th July 2020.
I have had a soft spot for the Fearless Summit ever since I attended my first one in 2015 and my life took a turn. In 2017, I got to serve with the production team at the summit and got a whole new appreciation for this event. So my very first reaction to this year’s summit was “Wow!!! The production, the transitions, the setup, the sound…!!” Yes, even one of the speakers going off for a few seconds on a zoom call due to connection was so realistic and relatable it was crazy. It was such a treat. Following this summit, I went on to be on the lookout for more events that have been moved online and it has been quite the experience.
This year, especially now that I live in Kenya, I was really looking forward to the full Fearless experience. Then our new friend Covid-19 came visiting and refused to heed all the notices that she had overstayed her welcome. Some would say she is like that friend or relative who comes to your house for a “short visit” and then you wake up one day and she’s been with you for over 6 months, has gotten comfortable, has their favorite seat, fights with your kids over the remote control, and eats your food without contributing a cent to the rent or utilities. You try everything to get her to move out but nothing seems to work. Then you remember you had a life before this and try to get back to it. One of these being events like the Summit. But I digress…
I WAS HERE! I feel like that is what I get to say to future generations. That I was here when this pandemic hit; when everyone was forced to either go digital or have their life at a standstill; when so many individuals and institutions had to question their relevance and how “essential” they are. I was here when the church was reminded that it is not about the buildings or the crosses, but the souls, the individuals, the community, the heart of our societies, and above all, the gospel. I was here when the Fearless Summit had its debut online, when Fearless radio was born, when the summit was free for all and when no one could claim they wished they could “make it for the summit”.
Now, you need to know that I am one of those who prefer online shopping, ordering in instead of eating out, and getting my groceries delivered to my doorstop. So yes, I was here when the Fearless Summit came to me. But as my 3-year-old niece likes to ask “so what?” So what if I was here? So what if I attended every single session? What difference will it make? What will I do with it? …
